Mario Gomez, 26, called 911 on New Year’s Eve to report that he had found his mother’s body near trash bins outside their home. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a gruesome scene at the Oldsmar home belonging to 48-year-old Maria Suarez-Cassagne. Her body was outside the Oldsmar home near some garbage cans.
It was believed that Maria’s other son, 23-year old, had murdered her – by cutting off her head and dumping it in an outside trash bin. While Christian had fled the scene, officers found the axe used as the murder weapon inside the family’s garage.
Shortly thereafter, a 911 call was received about a suspicious person riding a bicycle. When officers responded, it turned out to be Christian. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder after confessing to his mother’s murder. The motive: mom was nagging him to store some boxes in their attic. It is unknown whether Christian yet has an attorney.
Mario Gomez was uninjured physically, but for him, New Year’s will certainly never be a cause for celebration again.
